Learn the Secret of Contentment

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.  Philippians 4:12-13

What is the secret to being content in every situation? It seems that contentment is not something that comes naturally to us; even the Apostle Paul had to learn it. 

As Paul's faith grew and he talked about Jesus, he experienced hideous difficulties of being beaten, shipwrecked, imprisoned, and persecuted. Yet, he learned the secret of being content. Perhaps it was these hardships that taught him to rely on God for strength; he couldn’t control the circumstances or the pain inflicted on him, but, by the grace of God, he could turn his mind and heart to the One who could help him persevere. 

What hard circumstances are making you discontent? Rather than giving in to the temptation to rely on your own feeble strength, ask God to teach you His secret to contentment. Then, strongly say “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” 
  
Father, my days are difficult and I am discontent. Please forgive my attitude and self-reliance. Help me to learn the secret to contentment by relying on you for the strength I need today. In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
