For God's Glory

“Come and sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation.” “Sing a new song to the Lord! Let the whole earth sing to the Lord. Sing to the Lord; praise his name. Each day proclaim the good news that he saves.” (Psalm 95:1; 96:1-2)

Have you ever been asked to do something that you felt you had no strength to accomplish? It was a few days before my uncle’s funeral when my cousin asked me to sing with a group at his memorial service. Although I love to sing, I felt that I couldn’t do this, especially because my voice gets “stopped” when I am emotional or crying. God, however, had other plans and He would ask me to do what I thought was impossible – sing.

As I started that day, God provided His commands in my devotions: “Come and sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation”. And “Sing a new song to the Lord! Let the whole earth sing to the Lord. Sing to the Lord; praise his name. Each day proclaim the good news that he saves” (Psalms 95:1; 96:1-2). It was made abundantly clear that I was to set aside my insecurities and to sing for God’s glory.

So, sing I did, with a smile on my face, God’s peace in my heart and no tears choking my voice. I was even able to sneak in some harmony notes as I sang with my cousins.

And do you know the best part of doing this? It is telling the story of how God met me in this very difficult situation by providing timely Psalms and His strength to get through it. God’s request was for His glory and not my own. Thanks be to God for giving us the strength to praise Him, even when we our frail humanity seems unable to do as He asks.

Strength giving Father, thank you for asking us to do seemingly impossible tasks for Your glory. Forgive me when I let my human feelings get in the way. Please empower me to do as You prompt and to sing for Your glory. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
